{"id":1522,"date":"2020-02-03T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-03T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/normasueoneil.com\/?p=1522"},"modified":"2025-12-22T16:41:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T23:41:47","slug":"meet-palaimon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/normasueoneil.com\/?p=1522","title":{"rendered":"Meet Palaimon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Centaur\u2019s Perspective in <em>Sons of Apollo<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Character spotlight, mythic inspiration, and an alternate view of Book I.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Palaimon<\/strong> is the Alpha\u2014the highest-ranking leader\u2014of the first centaur herd readers encounter in the <em>Sons of Apollo<\/em> series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His name is drawn from Greek mythology, where <strong>Palaimon<\/strong> is the deified son of <strong>Io and Zeus<\/strong>. I chose it deliberately: the name means <em>\u201cthe wrestler,\u201d<\/em> a fitting title in centaur culture, where <strong>physical strength determines rank, authority, and survival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among his kin, <strong>Palaimon, son of Arktos<\/strong>, is known for being nearly unbeatable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally conceived as a minor supporting character, Palaimon\u2019s role expanded as the story took shape. Over time, he grew into a pivotal figure\u2014sometimes protective, sometimes oppositional, and at moments even seemingly villainous. That complexity is precisely what made him one of my favorite characters to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Different Kind of Centaur Leader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palaimon is not driven by a desire for harmony with mankind. Unlike his younger brother <strong>Petraios<\/strong>, diplomacy is not his instinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strength is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where Petraios believes in negotiation and coexistence, Palaimon believes in dominance, self-preservation, and the hard truths of centaur history. From his perspective, men have forgotten their debt to centaurs\u2014particularly to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/normasueoneil.com\/?p=763\">Kheiron<\/a><\/strong>, the great centaur teacher who trained humanity\u2019s most celebrated heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of gratitude, centaurs have inherited fear, hatred, and exile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Alternate Blurb: <em>Mate for a Centaur<\/em> Through Palaimon\u2019s Eyes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Just for fun\u2014and to explore his voice more deeply\u2014I wrote an alternate book blurb as if Book I were told from Palaimon\u2019s point of view.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Palaimon would prefer to have nothing to do with men, his younger brother Petraios has decided to trust them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the Oracle of Apollo promised him victory, Petraios intends to travel to <strong>Olympia<\/strong> and compete in Zeus\u2019 festival\u2014against men, against tradition, and against the renowned demigod <strong>Heracles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a bold and brash plan. Foolish, perhaps. Still, Palaimon cannot deny a certain satisfaction in watching men be humbled. And if Petraios gets himself into trouble\u2014as he often does\u2014Palaimon will be there to extract him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winning the contests is not the problem. <strong>Being allowed to compete is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Petraios has always possessed an uncanny\u2014and deeply irritating\u2014talent for persuading men to see his point of view. He believes centaurs can stand as equals among humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palaimon knows better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Centaurs were meant to be superior: stronger, faster, larger. Even among men, the greatest tutor in the art of war was a centaur. But since <strong>Kheiron\u2019s death<\/strong> and <strong>Ixion\u2019s disgrace<\/strong>, mankind has rewritten history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the influence of their political enemies\u2014the <strong>Taraxippoi<\/strong>\u2014men now teach their daughters to fear centaurs. Women are taught to loathe them. And without willing mates, the centaurs face extinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there are no women to bear their sons, the centaurs will cease to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palaimon\u2019s destiny, as promised by the Oracle, is to end this slow erasure. To break the <strong>curse of Ixion<\/strong> and secure the future of his people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is not found among the daughters of men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The centaurs need a mate of their own race\u2014a female centaur. A <strong>kentauris<\/strong>.
