What does a horse have to do with the sea?

The answer reveals something interesting about how the ancient Greeks understood Poseidon and the role he played in their mythology.

Poseidon, Lord of Horses

Among Poseidon’s many titles was Poseidon Hippios, meaning “Poseidon of Horses” or “Lord of Horses.”

In some traditions, he was even credited with creating the first horse.

This association appears throughout Greek mythology and religious practice. Horses were sacrificed in his honor, and he was worshiped by both sailors and horsemen.

To modern readers, these seem like entirely separate domains. Yet the Greeks saw a connection.

Movement and Power

One way to understand the relationship between Poseidon and horses is to consider what horses represented in the ancient world.

A horse was more than an animal. It was a source of mobility, strength, and influence. Horses allowed people to travel farther, move faster, and extend their reach beyond familiar territory.

The sea served a similar function.

Ships connected distant cities, carried goods across the Mediterranean, and brought travelers into contact with new cultures and ideas. For many Greeks, the sea was the great highway of the ancient world.

Both horses and ships carried people beyond the limits of ordinary life.

Both were powerful.

Both required skill to master.

And neither could ever be controlled completely.

More Than a Sea God

This broader perspective helps explain why Poseidon was associated with so many seemingly unrelated things.

In addition to the sea and horses, he was also known as Poseidon Enosichthon, the Earthshaker.

He ruled storms.

He caused earthquakes.

He influenced voyages.

At first these domains seem disconnected, but they all share something in common.

They move.

The sea moves ships.

Horses move people.

Storms move across the landscape.

Earthquakes move the earth itself.

Perhaps Poseidon was never simply a god of water. Perhaps he represented something larger: the powerful forces that shape the world and carry people into the unknown.

Why Poseidon Still Matters

The ancient Greeks depended on the sea for trade, travel, and survival. They understood that many of life’s most important opportunities arrived through forces they could not completely control.

In that sense, Poseidon embodied more than the ocean.

He represented movement, change, risk, and discovery.

Thousands of years later, that idea remains surprisingly familiar.

Life rarely stays still for long. New opportunities, unexpected challenges, and unfamiliar paths often arrive whether we are ready for them or not.

The Greeks imagined those forces in the form of a sea god carrying a trident.

And standing beside him, quite appropriately, was a horse.

This article is part of the Olympian Archive, an ongoing series exploring the gods of Greek mythology through illustration, symbolism, and storytelling.
