Every virtue, when taken to excess, can become a vice. Creativity is no exception. While it is a powerful and life-giving force, it also comes with unique challenges. Here are five common creative pitfalls\u2014and how to navigate them with intention.<\/p>\n

1. Distraction<\/h3>\n

Creative people are easily distracted\u2014not because they lack discipline, but because there are so many possibilities competing for attention. New ideas are exciting. Beginnings are exhilarating. But the middle? The middle feels like work.<\/p>\n

I learned this firsthand during a conversation with my mother. In a moment of discouragement, I said, \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to start new projects, and it\u2019s gratifying to finish them, but the middle part just feels like work.\u201d<\/em> She laughed\u2014not unkindly, but knowingly. Her laughter helped me see the problem clearly.<\/p>\n

Finishing what you start is not just about discipline; it brings closure, clarity, and confidence. It teaches lessons that cannot be learned any other way. Focus, work hard, and finish. The reward is not just the finished piece, but the growth that comes with seeing it through.<\/p>\n

2. Loneliness<\/h3>\n

Creative people often require solitude, but too much isolation can quietly turn into loneliness or even depression. Intense focus can cut us off from others if we\u2019re not careful.<\/p>\n

Balance is essential. Learn when solitude serves your work\u2014and when it becomes avoidance. Collaboration, conversation, and genuine connection often reignite creative energy. Meeting new people and exchanging ideas can be just as nourishing as quiet studio time.<\/p>\n

Loneliness can also stem from feeling misunderstood. Creating the work is one skill; communicating the vision behind it is another. Learning to articulate your ideas to others takes patience\u2014with them and with yourself. Remember that being around people is not the same as being connected. Relationships, like creative skills, require attention and practice.<\/p>\n

3. Sensitivity<\/h3>\n

Creative people tend to be deeply sensitive. This sensitivity is a gift\u2014it infuses your work with meaning\u2014but it can also become painful if your sense of worth is tangled up in what you create.<\/p>\n

You are not your work.<\/p>\n

One of my university professors, Jeffrey Carter<\/a>, once shared a perspective that shifted my understanding. He said his ego wasn\u2019t tied to his art, but to his music. That distinction helped me recognize something I had felt but never articulated.<\/p>\n

Earlier in my life, I thought I wanted to be a singer. While I learned to sing, I never learned how to perform. My inability to separate myself from my work made every shortcoming feel personal. Painting later taught me something different: my work could be on stage while I remained behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

Another professor, James Lorigan<\/a>, once said: \u201cWhen you create a work of art, it\u2019s like a little puppy. You love it and become attached to it. Sooner or later, every puppy becomes a dog. Sell it before it\u2019s a dog.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Learn when to let go.<\/p>\n

4. Perfectionism<\/h3>\n

Creative people are prone to perfectionism because improvement happens through doing. By the time a piece is finished, you\u2019ve already learned how to do it better.<\/p>\n

Leonardo da Vinci famously said, \u201cArt is never truly finished, only abandoned.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve learned to tell myself, \u201cI\u2019ll fix it on the next one,\u201d<\/em> and move forward. Growth depends on momentum. Perfectionism, like distraction, often masquerades as dedication\u2014but it can quietly stall progress. I also like this quote from Ira Glass that puts perfectionism into proper creative perspective:<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it\u2019s just not that good. It\u2019s trying to be good, it has potential, but it\u2019s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn\u2019t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I\u2019ve ever met. It\u2019s gonna take awhile. It\u2019s normal to take awhile. You\u2019ve just gotta fight your way through.\u201d<\/em><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n

5. Competition<\/h3>\n

Creativity is not a competition. Competition can be a tool for improvement, but it should never become the measure of your worth.<\/p>\n

There will always be people more skilled than you\u2014and those less experienced. Let those ahead of you inspire growth. Then turn around and encourage someone else. Lifting others is one of the most fulfilling creative acts.<\/p>\n

Creativity thrives on abundance. Ideas are not scarce. Two people can have similar ideas and still produce entirely different work. Your voice is unique, even if the idea itself is not\u2014and the same is true for everyone else.<\/p>\n

Praise is not proof of value, and lack of praise is not proof of failure. The purpose of praise is connection and renewal. The audience is having a creative experience too, and that experience deserves respect.<\/p>\n

Be generous with encouragement. Be quick to praise another.<\/p>\n

\n

Creativity is powerful, but it must be stewarded wisely.<\/p>\n
